UX Design with Government and Industry: Overcoming Institutional Constrains

Prof. Marcus Foth, Queensland University of Technology, Australia

Marcus Foth is a Professor of Urban Informatics in the QUT Design Lab, Faculty of Creative Industries, Education, and Social Justice, at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. He is also an Honorary Professor in the School of Communication and Cultureat Aarhus University, Denmark. His research brings together people, place, and technology. His current research foci include: urban media and geoprivacy; data care in smart cities; digital inclusion and participation; blockchain and food supply chains, and; sustainability and more-than-human futures. Marcus founded the Urban Informatics Research Lab in 2006 and has been at the helm of ubiquitous computing and human-computer interaction (HCI) research into interactive digital media, screen, mobile and smart city applications for two decades. This work has been adopted by industry (e.g., smart city programs by McKinsey, Intel, CISCO), and universities (e.g., urban informatics courses at NYU, University College London, Warwick, Northeastern).

About This Tutorial

This tutorial offers insights on some of the challenges when designers work with and for institutions. In this session, Professor Marcus Foth translated some theoretical concepts from design research, such as institutioning, into avenues for new sets of UX practice, such as intermediation. Therefore, this tutorial was suitable for both junior and senior interaction and UX designers who often find themselves working for government and industry clients, and academics who want to keep up with the current trend and research in UX.
