April 2015 was a busy month for UX Indonesia crews.
Earlier in April 2015, Eunice Sari and Adi Tedjasaputra were in Bandung, Indonesia to organise the CHIuXiD 2015, the first International ACM In-Coop in HCI and UX as the Co-Chair and Paper Chair respectively through Indonesia ACM SIGCHI (CHI UX Indonesia). This inaugural conference was the continuation of the first kick-off meeting UX Indonesia –Malaysia conducted in Jakarta in April 2014.
Since mid-2014, Eunice have worked very hard with the CHI UX Indonesia members to get the Association of Computing Machinery Special Interest Group in Human Computer Interaction (ACM SIGCHI) approve the status of CHIuXiD 2015 Conference to be the In Coop ACM Conference and to be included in the ACM International Conference Proceeding Series which subsequently allowed the successful conference papers to be published internationally in the prestigious ACM Digital Library.
Why do we have to do these extra miles? HCI and UX are emerging fields in Indonesia. There are however not much regional knowledge repository available to address the regional issues. As the pioneers in HCI and UX in Indonesia, it is their mission that more people are aware about the importance of HCI and UX. By pushing this event to its highest standard, it will push regional researchers and practitioners to produce their best knowledge outcomes and showcase them at international level. The process was not easy and long but it was worth of it. We finally managed to produce best quality of both international and national publication in the field of HCI and UX for the first time in UX (link to ACM DL CHI UX Indonesia).
Apart from the knowledge creation side, the CHIuXiD 2015 conference was a unique conference by the way it was conducted. For example: Eunice and Adi proposed an idea about participative session instead of parallel session, in which presenters must create activities within their 15-min presentation to engage listeners when they listen to their talks and an interactive booth where participants could actually meet each other and engage to decorate their name tag and to dress up to be anyone in their imagination and take a selfie or group photo in front of CHI UX Indonesia backdrop. We also worked with international presenters to create customised experience of sharing and engaging with Indonesian people. Adi made the movie presentation from Hao Dinh alive by facilitating it with interactive activities.
At the end all participants were not only satisfied with high quality of knowledge and skills they received, but also with the engagement experience and new connection that they create between academics across the universities, between academics and industries, between Indonesian and international participants.
Together with CHI UX Indonesia community and the conference host UNPAR, we have successfully made the CHIuXiD 2015 conference a great success.
